9. The Birth of Jesus

Luke 2:1-7

As pastors, we often talk about the sovereignty of God. In order for us to get a better grasp of sovereignty, we will begin with the word “Omnipotence”. God’s omnipotence means that God is able to do ALL his holy will.  The word “Omnipotence” is derived from two latin words, “omni,” that means “all” and “potens” that means “powerful.” Combined it means “all powerful". The omnipotence of God tells us that there are no external constraints on God’s decisions. God’s omnipotence means that His power gives Him the ability to do whatever He decides to do.

Now you’re thinking what does that have to do with me? Well, let me ask you, have you ever been frustrated that your plans didn’t go as you had hoped? I have and if you’re like me, your theology kicks in and you remember that God is “Omnipotent,” the “all powerful God”. He’s sovereign, one who exercises His power over His creation. He’s the God who has determined the circumstances and the events of your life’s journey to fulfill ALL His holy will. Now… this is also true in the life of Joseph and Mary. So, let’s look at The Birth of Jesus and see how God’s Sovereignty and God's Providence brought about the fulfillment of The Gospel of God in the birth of Jesus.
