The Resurrection of Christ

1 Corinthians 15:1-11

Happy Easter! Today is the day that we celebrate our Lord Jesus Christ’s resurrection from the dead and ascension into Heaven. We are here to celebrate that vitally important truth. So, let me ask you, "Does the resurrection of Christ matter? Does it truly make a difference?" The apostle Paul believed and preached that it did. In writing to the church at Corinth, Paul was confronted with the astonishing news that some in Corinth denied the future resurrection of the body. It was commonly accepted in the Greco- Roman world that death was the end. Well, not much has changed since the first century.

However, today the majority of religious people believe Jesus lived... also believe that he was crucified and died. What it really boils down to is this “Did Jesus resurrect from the dead and ascend into heaven?” So, let me ask you, "Does the resurrection of Christ matter? Does it truly make a difference?" The apostle Paul believed it did. Let’s see what Paul had to say in 1 Corinthians 15.

11. Christ Our Atonement

Genesis 3

Today, our series “Who is Jesus?” leads us to the book of Genesis. In Genesis 1 we see the wonderful work of God in His creation and in Genesis 2 we see God’s special favor towards man emphasized. But in Genesis 3, we come to the saddest moment in human history, when sin entered the world. This is something that the Word of God takes with absolute seriousness.

There is nothing insignificant and there's nothing frivolous in this passage. Every word that is spoken here is to be taken seriously. We can also see in Genesis 3 that we need an atonement.

An understanding of this passage is absolutely necessary to the understanding of the Gospel because without an understanding of sin and of our responsibility we cannot understand grace and the need for atonement. Only when you and I understand our responsibility to God and the fact that we are estranged from God and that God is estranged from us because of our sin, does the gospel make sense. We have a need for Someone to pay for our sin... for Someone to make atonement for us. So, here are some questions for us to consider: What are the marks of sin? What is the cause of atonement? Why is atonement necessary? What are the results of the atonement?

10. Christ Suffering for Us

Christ Suffering for Us

Mark 8:27-33

This is just a compelling passage. There’s this moment in time when the disciples settle “Who is Jesus?” There’s this moment when they believe and are convinced and confess that Jesus is God, He is the Son of God, He is the Sovereign God, He is the eternal God, He is God come into His creation in human form, He is the Messiah, the Promised Redeemer. He is the Gospel, He is Lord of Lords and King of Kings, He is our Hope, He is our Righteousness, He is our Justifier (justification), and He is our Union.

However, they were not prepared for what Jesus is about to teach them. What is it that is so upsetting that it would cause Peter to try to rebuke Jesus?

9. Our Union in Christ

Romans 6:1-14

As the Scripture reveals to us the awesomeness of Jesus, it establishes in Romans 5:12-21 and Romans 6:5 that true believers have a union with Christ: “We have been united with him in a death like his...” God established this union between Christ and all true believers so that what happened to Christ is counted by God as happening to us. In other words, His death is our death. It was God that established this union. 1 Corinthians 1:30 says...

Our Union in Christ

Romans 6:1-14

Today is our ninth week into our study of “Who is Jesus?” When we consider all that Jesus is, His work and His person, there is this awakening in our hearts and minds of just how awesome Jesus is. He is God, He is the Son of God, He is the Sovereign God, He is the eternal God, He is God come into His creation in human form, He is the Messiah, and the Promised Redeemer. He is the Gospel, He is Lord of Lords and King of Kings, He is our Hope, He is our Righteousness, and He is our justifier (justification).

1 Corinthians 1:30 says, "And because of him you are in Christ Jesus.” This union that God established between believers and Christ provided the way for him to count Christ's death to be our death.

Now, here’s the question that we must ask, if that’s true that I’m "united with him in a death like his” then “How can I who died to sin still live in it?”
