Luke 2:1-14

During this crazy and busy time of year it is important for us to stop and be reminded of what really matters.  In this day and age is it so easy to be distracted with everything that is happening around us. But we must not forget to celebrate the birth of our Savior.

This is so important because it reminds us of how glorious God is and how he has been carrying out His will since the beginning of time. Today my prayer is that you will be renewed in hope and joy as you revel in the majesty that is Jesus Christ.

4. The Heir

Galatians 4:1-7

We began “The Advent Series” in the book of Matthew, where Matthew presents us with the lineage of Jesus, the royal line of Israel. This leads us to the presentation of Jesus as the promised Messiah. Additionally, it shows how the supernatural birth of Jesus came to be and how it fulfilled Old Testament prophecy. Last week, we looked at the mystery of why Jesus the Messiah had to come.

His coming and His death on the cross fulfilled all that the old sacrificial system pointed toward.

Today, we’re going to look a bit further into "why" Jesus came.  In our text it states that Jesus Christ, both fully God and fully man, came not only for the purpose of redemption but of adoption. He came not only to pay the price of our sins but to make us new creations, adopted sons and heirs of God. As we look together at Galatians 4 we'll see the beautiful realities of adoption and what it means to be heirs of God.

3. The Mystery

Hebrews 10:1-18

Last week's text in Matthew chapter 1 showed us how it came to be that Jesus would be born. The angel came to Mary to tell her she would bare a son. The angel also came to Joseph and told him not to be afraid. The child Mary carried would be called Jesus and He would save the people from their sin. This was Old Testament prophecy fulfilled. But WHY did Jesus have to come? In...

In the Old Testament we read of a sacrificial system that was already in place. Was there a problem with the sacrificial system?

Our text, today, will take us to the book of Hebrews.  We'll see that the coming of Jesus Christ was all part of God's plan. The Old Testament pointed toward the coming of Jesus the Messiah. His coming and His death on the cross fulfilled all that the old sacrificial system pointed toward. Let's look together at WHY Jesus came and what it means to us today.

2. The Fulfillment

Today we continue our study of The Advent.  We mentioned last week that the word "Advent" means "coming". In the Old Testament we read of those who anticipated and longed for the "coming" of Jesus the Messiah, God's Salvation. In today's text we will read of the fulfillment of that anticipation and longing....

Matthew 1:18-25

Today we continue our study of The Advent.  We mentioned last week that the word "Advent" means "coming". In the Old Testament we read of those who anticipated and longed for the "coming" of Jesus the Messiah, God's Salvation. In today's text we will read of the fulfillment of that anticipation and longing.

We learned last week that the book of Matthew presents us with the lineage of Jesus, the royal line of Israel.  Our study today will continue in the book of Matthew where we see Jesus presented as the promised King and Messiah. Let's look together how the supernatural birth of Jesus came to be and how it fulfilled Old Testament prophecy.

1. The Prophecy

For centuries God prepared people for the coming of His Son. The prophets had prophesied that there was coming a day when God would send a Savior who would rescue the world from their sin. For centuries God prepared people for the coming of His Son. The prophets had prophesied that there was coming a day when God would send a Savior who would rescue the world from their sin. Christmas is the time that we celebrate the fulfillment of God’s promise, the promise that He would provide a way for us to fellowship with Him.

Advent is the season leading up to Christmas. It begins four Sundays before December 25. The word advent means "coming". So for the next few weeks we'll be looking at and remembering the thousands of years God’s people were anticipating and longing for the coming of Jesus—God’s salvation. Let's begin our Advent season today by looking at the prophecy of the birth of Jesus Christ.
